18th century theatre makeup, how did it look on a candlelit stage?

How do we recreate this expression and do we want to?

OISTAT arranges a one-day workshop on wigs and makeup in the 18th century. We start from a original sketch and create wig and makeup that is as close as possible and see how living light effects shape and texture. The workshop will do a presentation on the stage of the historical theatre Confidensen in Solna on June 3, 2022.

The workshop is held at Drottningholms Slottsteater theatre in their masque design workshop.

Drottningholms castle theatre was built in 1766 at the request of Queen Lovisa Ulrika. The theatre is constructed of simple materials and the auditorium is playfully decorated using paint, stucco, and papier mâché. The wooden stage machinery is operated by hand. It includes wind, thunder and cloud machines, as well as traps and moving waves.  In 1991 the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO designated the theatre, together with Drottningholm Palace, the Chinese Pavilion and the surrounding park, as being of international cultural heritage significance.

Confidencen is Swedens oldest theatre, originally built as a house for ridning in 1670. After an initiative by Queen Lovisa Ulrika, it was transformed into a theater in 1753.
It was long time forgotten, turned into a hunting lodge and finally used for various purposes such as a telegraph station, storage room  and other. When rediscovered in 1976, by the opera singer Kjerstin Dellert it was all in ruins. Mrs Dellert made it her life mission to restore and revive it, and today, 50 years later it has a reconstructed stage machinery and is back to its original splendor.

Sofia Ranow, masque designer and wigmaker has worked at Drottningholms castle theatre with their historical productions since 1990, She also works permanently at the Royal dramatic theatre in Stockholm. Sofia is one of Swedens leading Masque designers in historical makeup and wig.

During the workshop you will be able to try some of the techniques of how to style and work with a 18th century wig and  laying a 18th century makeup. We will look at our work in different light situations to learn about the differences. The workshop is an opportunity to experiment with makeup,  wigs and light. The workshop is mostly intended for  professional masque and wig makers.
